About Us

The MAS was established in 1969 to undertake projects that foster social, cultural, religious and educational advancement of the Moslem Alawite community in Australia. A purpose built community centre was originally located in Matthews street Punchbowl, where founding community members obtained Council approval for the site to serve as Mosque/Place of Worship.
The Board of the MAS established a successful afterhours Arabic language school and social welfare program for the community. By the 1990’s the centre was no longer able to facilitate the large community numbers reflected in increasing attendances to prayers, Ramadan activities and the celebrations of Eid Fitr and Eid Udha.
The rapidly growing size of the community in Sydney encouraged the MAS Board to undertake an extensive restructure and expansion of its core functions and projects. This recognition along with the geographical shift of the community underpinned the decision to relocate premises to a new and larger site in Yagoona. A strategic redirection of long term planning for the Moslem Alawite community occurred in 2001, when a symbolic changing of the guard took place as control of the MAS was handed over in popular elections to a Board dominated by Australian born and educated community members.
This change heralded the decision and commitment by the new Board to develop and implement its strategic plan for construction of the Al Sadiq College Primary school campus at the Yagoona site. The aspirations of the Moslem Alawite community came to fruition with the inauguration of the School, under the auspices of the MAS, in December 2003 by the Deputy Premier and Education Minister Dr Andrew Refshauge. This was then followed by the opening of the Al Sadiq College Secondary Campus at Greenacre in January 2008. The school has been successfully operating based only on the unity and generous support of the Moslem Alawite community in Australia
